Judge ReinholdThough zombie films are still coming out at an incredible pace, the good ones have been few and far between. Production company Circle of Confusion is setting out to deliver the goods with their new undead opus Gatekeeper, and judging from their odd casting, they could very well be on the right track!
Variety tell us that two of yesterday's film favorites, Judge Reinhold (pictured right) and Lea Thompson, are set to join-up with Ron Perlman and Jana Kramer in Gatekeeper, in which a simple mistake leaves three friends to defend their town from a zombie outbreak.
Isaac Meisenheimer wrote the script and will direct, and Circle of Confusion exec Stephen Emery will produce with production starting in September. "We intend to make a film in the vein of Shaun of the Dead for American audiences," Emery tells the trade. If they can manage a film that's a 10th as good as Shaun, we're all for it! Stay tuned for more as it comes.
UPDATE
Just heard from director Isaac Meisenheimer, "Sam Huntington was just cast as our lead. His character ends up working the night shift at a cemetery opposite Ron Perlman's character."

Zombie Thriller Gatekeeper Gets A Cast
A new zombie thriller called Gatekeeper has landed an '80s-tastic cast, with Back to the Future's Lea Thompson, Beverly Hills Cop's Judge Reinhold and Beauty and the Beast's Ron Perlman. It will also star Brick's Matt O'Leary and Click's Jana Kramer, who may not have starred in '80s classics but who were both born in the '80s.
We're told that the film is a zombie thriller, which producer Stephen Emery says will be "in the vein of 'Shaun of the Dead' for American audiences" - a laudable aim, at least. We're told that "a simple mistake" leaves three friends to defend their town from a zombie outbreak, in a script written and set to be directed by Isaac Meisenheimer.
There's no word on a release date for this yet, but we'd expect to see it sometime next year. Fingers crossed it manages to match the smarts, the scares and the funny of Shaun.

Circle of Confusion's producing "Gatekeeper," a zombie thriller with Matthew O'Leary, Lea Thompson, Ron Perlman and Jana Kramer attached.
Circle of Confusion exec Stephen Emery will produce, with production starting in September.
Isaac Meisenheimer is signed to make his feature directing debut on "Gatekeeper." Meisenheimer also penned the script, in which a simple mistake leaves three friends to defend their town from a zombie outbreak.
"We intend to make a film in the vein of 'Shaun of the Dead' for American audiences," Emery said.
